Early in the Spring, Columbia Bay where Columbia Glacier resides is still full of calved-off ice while the mountains still have their snow blankets. The Great Nunatak is one of the tallest peaks near the glacier. A nunatak is a part of a mountain that protrudes from an ice field or glacier that covers most of the the est of mountain or ridge. They are also called glacial islands. Examples are natural pyramidal peaks, when rounded by glacial action.
